Call to Action

Catholic agencies provide important social services to vulnerable people and families, including in the areas of adoption and foster care.  In order to continue to offer care to people in need, the Church must be free to operate in accordance with her convictions.

A 2016 regulation from Health and Human Services (HHS) threatened to shut out faith-based social service providers, including adoption and foster care agencies that respect a child’s right to a mother and a father. To restrict faith-based organizations’ work by infringing on religious freedom – as the 2016 rule threatened to do - is unfair and serves no one, especially the children in need of these services.  The Trump Administration has proposed a change to the 2016 rule, which would give faith-based agencies the space to continue to serve.

When there are over 400,000 children are in foster care, we need to take steps to increase – not decrease – their opportunities to be placed with safe and loving families.

Join the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in urging the Administration to adopt the proposed rule change. To do so, please click the link below to send your message to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

From November 2019 until Spring 2020, while the U.S. Supreme Court deliberates, it is vital that we encourage Congress to act to provide DACA recipients with a path to citizenship. As the House passed H.R. 6 which includes a path to citizenship for DACA recipients, we ask that you turn your attention to Senators Tester and Daines and urge them to stand in support of young adult immigrants by supporting legislative protection for DACA recipients generally and the Dream Act of 2019, S. 874, specifically.

Background
H.R. 6 would provide critical permanent legal protection to DACA recipients, TPS and DED holders who are living in a state of uncertainty and fear. The USCCB's Committee on Migration Chairman, Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, Texas, has voiced support for the bill numerous times: issuing a March 15, 2019 statement endorsing H.R. 6, sending a letter to each Member of the U.S. House of Representatives in support of the bill, and endorsing individual component bills of H.R. 6 prior to markup in the House Judiciary Committee on May 22, 2019.

Action
While the House passed its version of the Dream Act, we ask you to stand in solidarity with immigrants and their families by sending a message to Senators Tester and Daines and request that they support S.874, the Dream Act of 2019.

Recently, the public learned that an abortion doctor hoarded the bodies of his victims, keeping them in bags in his home and car. Tragically, Ulrich Klopfer is not the first person involved in abortion to blatantly disregard normal human respect for the dead. While we may easily grasp that abortion leads to the total denial of dignity to these babies, even in death, some supporters of legal abortion are also troubled by the actions of Dr. Klopfer. Respectful treatment of the dead is practiced by every culture and every religion and is ingrained in our psyche as human beings. Even legalized abortion hasn’t totally erased the feeling that these “products of conception” are human, deserving of more care than being thrown in biohazard bags, flushed down toilets, or put in the trash.

In response to the revelation of thousands of aborted babies found in the home of the late Ulrich Klopfer, Members of Congress introduced the “Dignity for Aborted Children Act” which requires that the bodies of aborted babies be treated with respect like other deceased human bodies, and either be buried or cremated.

Archbishop Naumann sent a
letter to the Senate and House urging support and passage of this bill.  Please join him and send your message of support today! There is no reason that anyone should deny basic respect to human remains.

The recent visit of Pope Francis to Hiroshima and Nagasaki is a poignant reminder of the grave threat to human life posed by nuclear weapons. Please contact your members of Congress and urge them to support the Richard G. Lugar and Ellen O. Tauscher Act to Maintain Limits on Russian Nuclear Forces (S. 2394/H.R.2529).

The United States and Russia possess over 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons. Our two nations must lead the way in global nuclear disarmament efforts. These bipartisan bills express a sense of Congress supporting the extension of the New START Treaty that places verifiable limits on both nations’ nuclear armaments. The Treaty is due to expire in 2021 unless it is extended. The bills also outline a number of reporting and certification requirements that will help contribute to informed national dialogue and appropriate Congressional oversight regarding the extension of the Treaty.

Catholic teaching on nuclear weapons has been clear since St. John XXIII wrote in Pacem in Terris that “nuclear weapons must be banned” (no.112). This teaching has been reaffirmed by each of his successors, most recently by Pope Francis on his visits to Nagasaki and Hiroshima, where he followed in the footsteps of St. John Paul II.
